I use Video Studio 6 and the Ulead plugin server to frameserve to TMPGEnc to get subtitles on my MPEG files. The plugin gives the subtitle functions, along with transitions, animated titles, etc. to TMPGEnc. Look for it in the Tools section at left.

  3. Anders 1693,

you could also use VirtualDub to frameserve to TMPGEnc.

You need to use an extra filter/plugin in vDub to add the subtitles. There's one available which works with SubStationAlpha (SSA).

    SSA is at http://www.eswat.demon.co.uk/substation.html

There are guides and lots of forum posts here on how to do this.

Post again if you have any problems.

    cheers,

  5. I'm sure it's all in the guide Baldrick linked to there, but I'd also add that you can use SubRip to rip the subtitles, rather than typing it all out in SSA. SubRip uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition), and it's a pretty amazing little app.

FlaskMPEG is recommended if you're converting from DVD, as it can pick up the subtitles from the vobs, but I've found it doesn't always do this right - give it a try first though for the easiest way to do it - Flask with a good plugin (Panasonic for VCD/MPEG1, or LSX, or the free BBmpeg plugin for MPEG1/2) gives pretty good results.

If you want to use all freeware, try Flask/BBmpeg or SubRip/SSA/VirtualDub/TMPGEnc.

PS. I think I remember that you can actually frameserve from Flask to TMPGEnc if that's your encoder of choice, but you need the frameserve client I think.
